President Biden signed a landmark executive order on "Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence" on Oct. 30. This order represents a significant step by the U.S. federal government in an effort to leverage the promise and mitigate the peril of artificial intelligence. The order is significant for a number of reasons. It directs certain AI industries to notify the government of training and safety results, directs federal agencies to develop new standards for AI, and encourages the global development of technical AI standards. But perhaps most importantly for the private sector, the order endorses a "responsibility" approach to the development and deployment of AI across the executive branch.
