Ash Kalra, a four-term Democratic assemblymember from San Jose known for his progressive politics and legislation, has been named chair of the Assembly Judiciary Committee.

Speaker Robert Rivas, D-Hollister, announced the appointment Tuesday as part of a housewide committee leadership shake-up, his first since taking the gavel in June. Kalra, who now chairs the Labor and Employment Committee, replaces Brian Maienschein, D-San Diego. Maienschein is termed out of office in 2024 and campaigning to become San Diego’s next city attorney.
