Billions of dollars in spending cuts proposed in Gov. Gavin Newsom’s revised budget include targeted reductions in programs meant to expand the ranks of court reporters and interpreters, according to additional details released late Friday by the state Department of Finance.

The Newsom administration wants to take back $16 million in unspent funding originally allocated in 2022 and 2023 to pay hiring and retention bonuses to new and existing certified shorthand reporters. The governor’s revised plan would also cut $10 million, or one-third of the total money, set aside for the bonuses in each of the next two years.
