In an era of free-agent partner moves in Big Law, law firms are hiring prominent laterals at a rapid clip this year. Elite firms like Kirkland & Ellis, Paul Hastings and Paul Weiss frequently garner headlines for the groups of laterals and individual partners they add in any given month.

At the same time, these law firms and others that have been particularly active on the lateral market have seen substantial U.S partnership exits, according to data obtained by Law.com, whether via lateral moves, moves to in-house roles or the government, or other types of departures. Other law firms have even seen net losses in U.S. partner moves.
