Gov. Gavin Newsom on Wednesday filled 11 vacancies in California’s superior courts, adding solo practitioners, lawyers in private practice and attorneys in the criminal justice system to the ranks of new judges.

Jessica Hawk, a senior deputy state public defender, was named a judge of the Alameda County Superior Court. Hawk has worked at the state public defender’s office since 2019 and was a law clerk at the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California and a staff attorney at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
