- On Aug. 27, Tom Girardi, 85, was convicted on four counts of wire fraud after a trial alleging he stole $15 million from clients.
- Testimony in the trial revealed that Girardi bragged about his accomplishments, wined and dined judges, sponsored legal events in Los Angeles and Las Vegas and hosted lavish parties, with entertainers such as LeAnn Rimes.
- Lenders relied on Girardi's success. 'He was certainly able to trade on that reputation for a while,' Kate Benveniste, who represented litigation lender Stillwell Madison, told Law.com.
In 2019, Leslie D. Corwin sued Tom Girardi and his firm, Girardi Keese, on behalf of a litigation lender that was owed repayment on a $12 million loan.
