The state bar will ask active lawyers how many hours of free and low-cost legal work they performed in the previous calendar year. The information will be kept confidential, and there's no penalty for refusing to provide it.

Active California lawyers can expect to be asked for more than just a payment with their next licensing fee bill. The state bar will also want to know how many pro bono hours they completed in the last calendar year.
A new law signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom will require the bar to collect the information and then, if it chooses, publish the data in the aggregate. An individual lawyer's totals will be kept confidential and cannot be disclosed under the state's public records laws.
