A California state court granted summary judgment to RingCentral, a voice over internet protocol company, in a privacy class action alleging that it intercepted and recorded phone calls without the plaintiffs' consent.

San Mateo Superior Court Judge Jeffrey R. Finigan issued the ruling on Oct. 11, which concluded that the same exemptions accorded to telephone companies under California's wiretapping statutes applied to RingCentral and other VoIP providers. The minute order of the judge's decision was filed this week.
