Social media company X Corp. on Thursday sued to block enforcement of a new California law that requires online platforms to remove or label campaign-related deepfakes before and after an election.
In the suit filed in Sacramento federal court, attorneys for X argued that the so-called Defending Democracy from Deepfake Deception Act violates the constitutional right to free speech as well as content-platform protections in Section 230 of the federal Communications Decency Act.
