After more than seven days of deliberations, the first California jury to decide whether Zantac causes cancer ended in a mistrial on Thursday.

The trial, in Oakland’s Alameda County Superior Court against Boehringer Ingelheim, is the first in California to allege that Zantac, a heartburn medication recalled in 2020, caused cancer. Two Zantac trials in Illinois’ Cook County Circuit Court ended in mistrials, while juries in two others handed defense verdicts to Boehringer Ingelheim and GlaxoSmithKline, which agreed last month to settle 80,000 Zantac lawsuits for $2.2 billion.
