An unusually splintered California Supreme Court on Monday vacated the second-degree murder conviction of a Tehachapi woman whose partner killed their 2-month-old son.

In a 5-2 decision that included two concurring opinions, the majority said Brittney Collins did not harbor the criminal intent needed to trigger a finding of murder in the death of her infant son at the hands of his methamphetamine-using father, Matthew Norwood.
