Of course, Daly will not have gender to differentiate himself from Hayashi, as Bean did. And Hayashi has superior name recognition, both through his wife’s and his own political campaigns.

While transgender candidate Victoria Kolakowski — who finished five points behind Daly — did not say in an interview Wednesday whom she would endorse, she called Daly “my old friend” in a post-campaign e-mail to supporters. She labeled Hayashi “our major rival” in the following sentence.

Had she been elected, Kolakowski would have likely been the nation’s first openly transgender judge. Now that the June election is over, she spoke of the experience in glowing terms — especially as it related to LGBT inclusion.

“Other than one or two cranks on the Internet, I encountered no overt hostility,” she said. “I ran a completely out campaign, and I don’t think it had any effect on the outcome of the race.”
