Assailants in a white Tahoe on a freeway opened fire on three cars that left a skating rink parking lot on the night of October 10, 2003. Lateesha Stephens was shot in the head in her Ford Explorer, received significant brain injuries and ultimately died.

Both Kenith Murphy and Curtis Gilbert were fired upon in their vehicles but were uninjured. Murphy testified that shots came from the passenger side of the Tahoe but could not remember if they came from the front. As far as he remembered, there were two people firing from the Tahoe, but he could not see inside.
