SAN FRANCISCO — Criminal defense lawyers are up in arms over California prosecutors’ alleged push for a ballot initiative that would let the state’s appellate courts handle death penalty cases and increase the crimes for which execution can be sought.
They also claim the California District Attorneys Association wants to force every attorney who handles indigent appeals to also take a death case regardless of training or experience.
