It will be a new year in the Eastern District of Texas in more ways than one. The Federal U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals issued a writ of mandamus last week, making it easier for defendants to transfer patent cases to other venues.

The Dec. 29 decision in In Re: TS Tech USA Corp., et al. found that U.S. District Judge T. John Ward of Marshall “clearly abused” his discretion when he denied TS Tech’s motion to transfer its patent fight with Lear Corp. to a more convenient venue in Ohio.
