SAN FRANCISCO — When San Francisco Public Defender Jeff Adachi took the podium before the county’s board of supervisors on Feb. 3 during time normally reserved for public comment, his request for $50,000 to fund two paralegal positions had already been denied twice, by the mayor and the board.

In response, he promised to drop major cases if the money didn’t come, irking City Hall. The board’s budget analyst chewed out Adachi, saying he’d made duplicitous statements about his office’s costs. One supervisor, citing citywide cuts amid the $500 million deficit, sent a letter to the controller essentially asking for an audit of the public defender’s office.
