SAN FRANCISCO — Amid a flurry of budget cuts and readjustments that will culminate today and Tuesday in San Francisco’s City Hall, one figure appears to be coming out on top: Public Defender Jeff Adachi.

Adachi entered the deficit-ridden budget season in a precarious position: He jousted publicly with Mayor Gavin Newsom and the board of supervisors, and rather than abide by Newsom’s citywide request for cuts asked for a $1.7 million increase. Members of the legal community speculated about what kind of cuts Adachi would be forced to swallow in the end.
