SACRAMENTO — A reduced number of bailiffs has left Alameda County judges scrambling to adequately staff criminal calendar courtrooms, court officials say.

The Alameda County Superior Court had to cut approximately $1 million from its security spending this fiscal year, leading to the loss of bailiffs in courthouses throughout the county. The result has been a daily logistical puzzle forcing judges and administrators to piece together a workable combination of security staffing, available courtrooms and schedules.
