The management vacuum at the Northern District U.S. attorney’s office expanded when veteran criminal chief Ross Nadel resigned his supervisory position, capping months of departures and turmoil. U.S. Attorney Kevin Ryan named his first assistant, Eumi Choi, acting chief of the criminal division. She was considered Ryan’s closest ally in the office, and already had a lot on her plate. Now she would be reviewing criminal cases, allocating personnel resources, and setting criminal policy until Ryan could find a permanent replacement for Nadel.

Judge David Ballati took the next spot in line for presiding judge of San Francisco Superior Court when his colleagues elected him assistant PJ. Among three contenders for that job, Ballati garnered 25 votes, Judge Charlotte Woolard received 14, and Judge A. James Robertson got 7.
