SACRAMENTO — Santa Clara County has paid $500,000 in attorneys fees to the First Amendment Coalition after an appellate court ruled that the county had no right to shield a detailed map database from the public.

Peter Scheer, the coalition’s executive director, said the $500,000 appears to be the biggest attorneys fee ever secured by litigation brought under the California Public Records Act.
