SAN FRANCISCO — A Los Angeles jury came back with a defense verdict (.pdf) Monday in a seven-week asbestos trial in which the plaintiff lawyer had sought more than $9 million.

William James Goebel, who was 78 when he died, suffered from malignant pleural mesothelioma and sued more than 20 companies over his exposure to asbestos.
