Varian Medical Systems Inc. was founded in Palo Alto in the 1940s by a group of scientists and inventors. It is now the world’s leading manufacturer of medical devices and software for treating cancer with radiation therapy. Traded on the New York Stock Exchange (VAR), the company was named to BusinessWeek’s 2009 50 Best Performers list — a position it has held for three years.
The company reported $319 million in net earnings for the fiscal year ending in September 2009, down from $280 million last year. It has 5,100 employees in North America, China and Europe and in 60 sales and support offices worldwide.
