Symantec Corp., perhaps best known for its Norton computer-security software, is one of the world’s largest independent software companies. Virus protection, data backup, intrusion detection and spam control are among its essential services to individual consumers, businesses and governments. Founded in 1982 by Gary Hendrix, an expert on artificial intelligence, the company focused on niche software to avoid going head-to-head with Microsoft Corp. Symantec employs some 17,500 people in more than 40 countries and reported $6.1 billion in revenues during the past fiscal year. Symantec’s headquarters is in Cupertino, and its primary manufacturing facility is in Dublin, Ireland.
