AECOM is one of the world’s fastest-growing A/E (architecture/engineering) firms. It was founded more than 25 years ago as the engineering subsidiary of Ashland Inc., a Kentucky-based chemical company that had its roots in the oil business. AECOM is comprised of dozens of operating subsidiaries, some more than a century old, that provide engineering and architectural design, consulting, management support and program and construction management services for clients in the transportation, facilities, environmental and energy markets. The Los Angeles-based company went public in 2007 on the NYSE (ACM), and as of 2009 its revenues stood at $6.1 billion, nearly double its 2006 numbers. AECOM was listed as the No. 2 firm in Engineering News-Record’s 2009 Top 500 Design Firms rankings. Also last year, Newsweek included AECOM on its list of Greenest Big Companies.
