SACRAMENTO — Attorney General Jerry Brown’s office broke no laws last year when a press aide surreptitiously taped phone conversations with reporters, Alameda County District Attorney Nancy O’Malley said Thursday.

Brown asked O’Malley to investigate after his communications director, Scott Gerber, admitted recording five interviews between journalists and the attorney general. Gerber said he was simply trying to ensure that Brown’s comments were reported accurately, but he later resigned.
