SAN FRANCISCO — The California AG’s top criminal lawyer has leveled a blast at one of his chief adversaries, the Habeas Corpus Resource Center, accusing it of repeatedly overstepping its mission of representing death row inmates.

In a letter filed with the California Supreme Court in December, Dane Gillette berated the HCRC, created in 1998 to represent inmates in post-conviction proceedings, for allegedly engaging in activities not authorized by state statute.
