Edward Kuwatch, a colorful expert in DUI law who called himself “Fast Eddie” and once ran for California attorney general, died at his Mendocino County home after a lengthy illness. He was 57 and had been diagnosed with a brain disease, his wife said.

Gov. Gray Davis kicked over a hornet’s nest by saying that his judicial nominees should resign if they can’t “implement my vision” on such issues as the death penalty. A day later he tried to repair the damage. “I regret that my comments … were interpreted to suggest that I do not believe in an independent judiciary,” he said in a press release. “Once a judge is appointed, I fully respect the independence of the judiciary as a co-equal branch of government committed to following the law and constitution.” California Supreme Court Chief Justice Ronald George said in a prepared statement that “I appreciate the clarifying statement the governor has issued.”
