SAN FRANCISCO — Robert Holtzapple is the first to admit his biggest concern in the dark days of 2009 was a luxury problem.

Farella Braun & Martel’s litigation group, which Holtzapple chairs, turned out to be busy enough last year that he wished he could have hired one or two associates. He said more of his 20 associates billed closer to 2,000 hours than to the target 1,850.
