SAN FRANCISCO — Alameda County’s high-profile murder case against ex-BART cop Johannes Mehserle is one few prosecutors likely would want. It’s an uncomfortable role for district attorneys so accustomed to working side by side with police officers.

The prosecutor entrusted with the Mehserle case, David Stein, one of the stars of the DA’s felony trial staff, has worked closely with police in the past. During a five-year stint with the county’s narcotics task force he was posted at its headquarters, reviewing search warrants and counseling on strategies.
