SAN FRANCISCO — The game is on.

San Mateo-based online game developer Digital Chocolate Inc. sued Zynga Game Network Inc. on Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Northern California, alleging the rival gaming company falsely claimed it created the popular Facebook game “Mafia Wars.” Digital Chocolate first released “Mafia Wars” in 2004, while Zynga released its version in 2008.
