SAN FRANCISCO — International Business Machines Corp. has agreed to buy privately held Blade Network Technologies Inc. for an undisclosed amount, in a bid to improve its networking capabilities and compete with companies like Hewlett-Packard Co., Oracle Corp. and Cisco Systems Inc.

Santa Clara-based Blade makes switches and software that connect servers, storage and networks in large data centers. Its investors include Garnett & Helfrich Capital and Juniper Networks Inc.
