SAN FRANCISCO — Three days after Kamala Harris surprised California political observers by taking a narrow lead in the race for California attorney general, the outlook for who might succeed her as San Francisco district attorney remained wide open.
Several possibilities for an appointment have emerged, but it’s unclear whether one of the strongest potential contenders — Superior Court Judge Katherine Feinstein — actually wants the job. Other judges could also throw their hats in the ring, while former homicide prosecutors James Hammer and William Fazio have expressed interest. And with Gavin Newsom on his way to Sacramento, the Board of Supervisors could have a role in the pick, possibly putting board President David Chiu in the mix.
