SAN FRANCISCO — Rumors are swirling that Google Inc. is preparing for a shopping spree. The search engine has already spent $1.6 billion to acquire 20 companies in the first nine months of this year, according to regulatory filings.
It’s purchased mobile-ad service AdMob Inc. and has a pending bid to acquire travel data aggregator ITA Software Inc., for about $700 million each, the company’s third- and fourth-largest deals since Google went public in 2004.
