Founded in 1969 by Donald and Doris Fisher, San Francisco-based retailer Gap Inc. has grown to about 3,100 stores worldwide, with locations ranging from France to Japan. Along with its own brand, Gap operates Banana Republic, Old Navy, Athleta and Piperlime. In fiscal 2009, the company had revenues of $14.2 billion — $1.6 billion of which came from international sales. Through the first three quarters of 2010 sales were running about 4 percent ahead of last year’s pace.

Michelle Banks, 47, is senior vice president, general counsel, corporate secretary and chief compliance officer for Gap Inc. Gap has a legal team of about 100, approximately 40 of whom are attorneys, including four deputy GC vice presidents who report to Banks: Thomas Lima (corporate/finance, employment), Julie Gruber (brand services, archives/records/privacy), Raymond Miolla (real estate, Europe and franchise) and Wilma Wallace (commercial, regulatory compliance and global integrity).
