SAN FRANCISCO — This past year may not have served up much in the way of eye-popping lateral partner moves, but that’s not to say some significant names didn’t change homes. Southern California legal recruiters Valerie Fontaine and Madeleine Seltzer of Seltzer Fontaine Beckwith pointed to Allen Ruby’s jump to Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom at the start of the month. Also notable, they said, was William Coats’ move from White & Case to help Kaye Scholer open a Palo Alto office in March. Skadden also scored with the addition of patent lawyer James Elacqua from Dechert in February and Sidley Austin when it nabbed corporate lawyer Yabo Lin from Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal in June.

Seltzer and Fontaine have offered a year in review of the lateral partner scene and the hottest practice areas. Below are their thoughts.
