The California Supreme Court affirmed a judgment. The court held that no warrant was required to search a cell phone or other handheld electronic device seized from a suspect’s person at the time of his or her lawful arrest.

Gregory Diaz was arrested after he participated in a controlled purchase of ecstacy pills. When Diaz was searched at the scene, a small amount of marijuana was recovered from his back pocket. Diaz also had a cell phone in his possession, but it was not seized at that time.
