SAN FRANCISCO — A 43-foot cross at a veterans’ memorial in La Jolla violates the Equal Protection Clause of the U.S. Constitution, the Ninth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals ruled today .

The unanimous opinion from a three-judge panel comes after two decades of litigation over the Latin Cross atop Mt. Soledad. The judges, all three appointed by Democratic presidents, determined the cross conveys a message of government endorsement of religion.
