According to information compiled by the Administrative Office of the Courts, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger made 629 bench appointments, or about 37 percent of California’s 1,664 judges. That may seem like a lot, but according to AOC figures, George Deukmejian appointed at least 750 judges, and Jerry Brown, more than 650. Schwarzenegger’s immediate predecessor, Gray Davis, appointed just 348 judges while Pete Wilson appointed 513.

Schwarzenegger’s count was boosted by nearly 100 new judgeships authorized by the legislation in 2006 and 2007 that created new bench seats and authorized the conversion of subordinate judicial officers positions to judgeships.
