SAN FRANCISCO — Caine Moss was vacationing in Palm Springs last March when he got a call from Anthony McCusker, a partner in Gunderson Dettmer Stough Villeneuve Franklin & Hachigian’s Silicon Valley office. “It was the strangest phone call I’ve ever received,” he said.

McCusker told Moss, then a partner at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, that he, Craig Schmitz and James Riley were all leaving Gunderson for Goodwin Procter’s Silicon Valley office. And he wanted Moss to join their technology companies group. The catch? They were leaving in two days.
