SAN FRANCISCO — Like many M&A lawyers in Silicon Valley, Russell Hansen approached 2010 with trepidation. Activity had picked up at the end of 2009, but the head of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher’s Palo Alto office was far from certain the upward trend would continue.

“A lot of people were looking backward at 2009,” Hansen said. “But by the end of the year, people were much more confident the market had returned.”
