SAN FRANCISCO — John Hartenstein, a San Francisco public finance lawyer and chair of the school finance and general obligation bonds group at Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe, died Jan. 30 at his home in Berkeley. He was 52.

“He was an excellent and thoughtful attorney who cared deeply about his clients. As importantly, he was a true gentleman and a dear friend,” said Roger Davis, chair of Orrick’s public finance department. “He was more than just a lawyer to most of his clients. He was very passionate about doing everything he could to help school districts perform their functions.”
