SACRAMENTO — Gov. Jerry Brown on Tuesday named Ann Ravel chairwoman of the Fair Political Practices Commission, giving the former county counsel of Santa Clara Counsel a powerful role in shaping California election law.

Ravel has been serving as a deputy assistant attorney general in the Obama administration since 2009. She will leave that position on March 4 to return to California, where her husband and children still reside.
