SAN FRANCISCO — San Francisco Superior Court probate Judge Isabella Horton Grant died March 5 of cancer. She was 86.

A family lawyer before being appointed by then-Governor Jerry Brown to the San Francisco Municipal Court in 1979, friends say Grant was known for her judicial temperament, fairness and dedication to the job. She was elevated to the superior court in 1982 and spent 11 years as presiding judge of the probate department there. Before that, she was presiding judge of the court’s family law department. She retired from the bench in 1997, according to a statement from Katherine Feinstein, S.F. Superior Court’s presiding judge.
