SAN FRANCISCO — If Google Inc.’s $900 million bid for Nortel Networks’ patent portfolio is approved, it could be a game changer for the search engine as it tries to bolster its weak position in the smartphone patent war, lawyers said.
“It’s far and away the most Google has ever paid in a patent deal,” said Ronald Laurie, who owns the IP consulting firm Inflexion Point Strategy in Palo Alto. “If the deal goes through, they will be a member in good standing of the big patent buyers club.”
