The Second Appellate District reversed a judgment with directions. The court held that an arbitration award that arose from a law firm and clients’ having submitted a fee dispute to arbitration had to be vacated after the arbitrators exceeded their powers by ruling that the arbitration was binding.
Glaser, Weil, Fink, Jacobs & Shapiro, LLP, represented George and Esther Goff in a legal matter. By letter, Glaser advised the Goffs regarding unpaid fees and costs that Glaser would seek to collect in an action that it would file. The Goffs submitted a request for binding arbitration of the fee dispute to the arbitration-services provider of the local bar association.
