SAN FRANCISCO — The three contenders for San Francisco district attorney managed to find a few things to disagree on during their first debate Wednesday night.

Hundreds were on hand at the LGBT Center to hear the incumbent, George Gascón, and rivals David Onek and Sharmin Bock largely agree on the need for creative prosecution. They all voiced support for decriminalizing drugs. They all expressed a commitment to restorative justice practices. But only Onek committed to never seeking the death penalty. Bock and Gascón said that they would probably never seek it — partly because a San Francisco jury would never go along — but Bock said she would continue Kamala Harris’ process of sending cases through a special circumstances committee to weigh sentencing options. Onek called this a “sham process” that would only be worth participating in for “political reasons,” which he refused to do. (See video of the debate here.)
