SAN FRANCISCO — Squire, Sanders & Dempsey made its acquisition of the Perth office of Minter Ellison official as of Wednesday. Squire’s leaders say that the addition of 80 Western Australian business and litigation attorneys comes with some advantages for its 50 Northern California attorneys.

Squire’s Bay Area office deputy managing partner Michael Kelly said that Squire, Sanders’ business transactional, international dispute resolution and IP attorneys have over the years quietly built up relationships with clients in China, Singapore and Indonesia. Many of those companies are eager to tap into Western Australia’s natural resources, mining and energy sectors, he said. Until now, those companies haven’t been turning to Squire attorneys, Kelly said. He declined to name specific clients. “They’re typically large Chinese manufacturing companies looking to do joint ventures or create other kinds of commercial relationships with companies so that they can lock in their source for key natural resources,” he said.
