It was the mid-1970s, and Judith O’Brien was a young associate in San Jose trying to have lunch with a client. But when they arrived at the restaurant, there was a problem. Women weren’t allowed, and it wasn’t even a men’s club.

“That was not uncommon. Restaurants in San Francisco did the same thing,” O’Brien said. “The partner I was with said ‘OK, if you can’t come, none of us can.’”
