The headlines blare with tales of public officeholders who have engaged in mind-boggling acts of misbehavior and rank corruption. Self-promotion often seems the norm for those in government. It is thus especially noteworthy that an unassuming public servant with a divinity school background, San Jose federal Judge Jeremy Fogel, has been tapped to play an important role in the leadership of the federal judiciary.

Yet when word spread in Bay Area legal circles that Chief Justice John Roberts, and the rest of the leadership of the Federal Judicial Center, had selected Fogel to direct the FJC, the reaction was decidedly mixed. This promotion means that Fogel will be leaving Northern California for Washington, D.C., this month, a bittersweet realization.
