Attorneys rely on subscription databases to access current, authoritative content at the point of need. However, they pay a high price for this convenience. These time-saving tools represent a significant overhead expense, particularly for solo and small firm attorneys. Attorneys are often unaware that they can reduce research costs by accessing many of these databases free of charge at their local county law library. As an added benefit, experienced reference librarians can assist library visitors in effective use of library databases.
Free Database Access
Like most county law libraries, the Alameda County Law Library maintains subscriptions to numerous fee-based legal databases library visitors can use free of charge. The library currently subscribes to Westlaw, LexisNexis, OnLaw, HeinOnline, VerdictSearch, EBSCO Legal Information Reference Center and West’s California Public Law Library Briefs Service. In addition to primary legal materials, full-text, searchable versions of many popular practice guides, formbooks and legal encyclopedias are available through these services.
